Are Emeralds Rarer Than Diamonds?

Speaking of gemstones, diamonds are the best-known and considered traditional gems. Diamonds are forever, not only because they are hard and durable but also because they are truly beautiful and rare, no doubt.

But then other coloured gemstones have been known for their beauty and benefits for a long time. Some of them are even rarer than diamonds.

Like other precious emeralds, they are known as Panna stones and are one of the Navratans. These are rarely found and have charisma attached to them.

So, are emerald stones more valuable than diamonds? Are emeralds rarer than diamonds in the world?

Yes, indeed, they are. Emeralds are rarer than diamonds. They are rarer to be found, especially in the finest quality and large sizes.

According to a study, Panna stone is almost 20 times rarer than transparent diamonds.

Now, another question might be rising at the back of your head-

Which one is the most valuable of these two gemstones: emeralds or diamonds?

Well, emeralds are more valuable than diamonds. The valuation of emeralds is higher, in particular Colombian emeralds, which possess the finest clarity and colour. Therefore, rather often, the Panna stones are often rather expensive compared to Heera.

Which is more expensive, a diamond or an emerald?

The cost of a gemstone is determined based on 4Cs: Cut, clarity, colour and Cut.

These factors will account for an emerald stone price ranging between INR 2,000 to 5 Lakhs per carat. The exclusive Panna gem with a deep dark green colour that is uniformly distributed and has no under or overtone, being finely cut and having fewer inclusions, will cost around millions per carat.

If the cut, clarity, and size of a Panna stone and a diamond are the same, then the cost of the natural green emeralds will be higher.

Are emeralds rarer than diamonds now?

The rarity of emeralds vs diamonds also depends on the colour of the diamond. Traditional diamonds were transparent and, therefore, since the beginning, emeralds had been considered rarer than them.

But today, we know that there are red diamonds, black, green, blue, and brown diamonds, too. They are the rarest diamonds in the world and even more rare than emeralds.
